CUPRAL ANTI-FOUL SYSTEM

Fouling protection of marine growth on ships hulls and sea water circulation systems has been an ongoing issue for ships for many decades. Methods for combating the growth of marine fouling have traditionally been based on the use of harsh chemicals such as chlorination and biocide dosing systems, these are both potentially harmful to personnel and the environment.

To overcome these issues a less aggressive, low cost and environmentally acceptable alternative has been developed by Marine Protections Systems called the Cupral Anti-fouling system.

Benefits of Cupral Anti-Foul System

The Cupral Anti-Foul System is exclusively designed and manufactured in Christchurch by MPS to eliminate blockages caused by bio-fouling in salt water cooling pipework.

If not controlled mussels and other marine growth build up in salt water cooling systems leading to reduced flow or blockages. These issues are time consuming and costly to repair as often large sections of pipework need to be replaced or cleaned. The operation and safety of the vessel can also be put at risk as seawater valves and other vital equipment may be affected.

The benefits of fitting an anti-fouling system are:
·    Prolonged life of pipework and therefore reduced maintenance costs.
·    Greater fuel efficiency by preventing partial blockages which may cause engines to run at higher temperatures.


The MPS Cupral Anti-Fouling System

The purpose of the MPS Cupral anti-fouling system is to reduce the fouling in the salt water cooling system based on the principle of an impressed current system, which employs copper and aluminium or iron sacrificial anodes, which are usually installed in the sea chests. A low DC current is passed through these anodes. This current is controlled and can be monitored by the Cupral Control Unit.

The system generates copper and either aluminium or iron ions by electrolysis in seawater to prevent the buildup of marine fouling and corrosion. In operation, the copper anode produces ions which are transported by the seawater and carried into the pipework system and equipment beyond.
Concentrations of copper in solution are extremely small, but are sufficient to prevent marine life from settling and growing. At the same time, the aluminium or iron anode produces ions produce an anti-corrosive layer on the internal surface of pipes throughout the system.

The Cupral Anti-Foul system gives complete and continuous protection to pipework, valves and condensers as well as vital firefighting equipment, refrigeration and air conditioning unit.

The anode functions are as follows:
Copper:        Antifouling
Aluminium:   Protects carbon steel surfaces
Iron:            Protects non-ferrous surfaces
